SUMMARY:Out There–Planetarium Show
DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, mankind thought that the Earth was the centre of the Universe. Thanks to our curiosity\, imagination and urge to explore\, we now know that planets like our Earth are nothing special in the cosmos. The Sun is just one ordinary star among hundreds of billions in our galaxy\, the Milky Way. With the world’s most powerful telescopes\, we are able to explore more and more of the Universe. What we have found so far has surpassed even the wildest expectations of scientists as well as authors of science fiction. Most stars have planets — it turns out they are more common than we thought.\nA huge diversity of different worlds is out there\, just waiting to be discovered. \nFREE for members. $10 for non-members. \nRecommended for ages 4+

DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY DAY\nVisit North Museum on May 3 from 10am–3pm to join this global celebration! It brings astronomy enthusiasts and the public together to share their passion for the cosmos through educational and stargazing activities. Enter with general admission. FREE for members. \nNorth Museum Activities include: \n\nLander creation\nLander testing\nSpace Slime\nSun Dial creation\nBottle Rockets\nQuantum Levitator\nSolar Scope\nNebular Creation\nNight Sky Observation on North Museum grounds\nand more…\n\nBUY TICKETS TO THE MUSEUM FOR MAY 3\nAstronomy Day History:\nIt was established in 1973 by astronomer Doug Berger\, who set up telescopes in public places to allow people to observe the skies. \nComet C/1975 N1 (Kobayashi-Berger-Milon) Image 2. National Air and Space Museum photo.\nAs an amateur astronomer based in Union City\, California\, Berger independently discovered Comet Kobayashi-Berger-Milon in 1975 on July 5. This was just a few days after its initial discovery by Toru Kobayashi near Fukui\, Japan\, on July 2\, and shortly before Denis Milon’s observation in Mount Washburn\, Wyoming\, on July 7. The comet\, formally designated as Kobayashi-Berger-Milon\, was characterized by Milon as having a 7.5 magnitude\, appearing diffuse with condensation\, and exhibiting a coma diameter of 10′. Although initially reported without a tail\, subsequent observations at the Lick Observatory revealed a short tail less than 1° in length. \nThis collaborative and independent series of discoveries showcases the vital role of amateur astronomers in contributing to our understanding of the cosmos. \n

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Member Lecture: Lancaster County Grist Mills
DESCRIPTION:UNFORTUNATELY THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. NORTH MUSEUM APOLOGIZES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE. \nLancaster County Grist Mills\nThey were hubs of the local economy\, where are they now?\nThis presentation features Lancaster County’s water-powered grist mills. This is a summary of my book\, Mills of Lancaster County published by Masthof Press. Lancaster County’s mills were once extremely important contributors to the Lancaster County economy. They were hubs of the local economy. The location of the early mills often dictated the formation of the road networks. Many of them served as local post offices. The local mill was where people went to get their mail and catch up on the local news while delivering their corn or wheat to be processed into animal feed\, cornmeal\, or flour. Today\, most of them are long gone\, but about 100 still stand as testaments to a bygone era. Two of the mills in the county are set up as museums and are worth a visit. Others have been converted into residences or businesses. Still others have been abandoned and are slowly decaying. The presentation begins with a brief history of milling and water-powered mill technology. Then we will hear stories from a few of the mills. Finally\, we will wrap up with a summary of the current uses for the mills that still exist today. \nPresenter Donald Kautz is a retired software developer\, amateur photographer\, and local historian. Don has given numerous talks in the local area about the history of the Conestoga River. He has written a book entitled “The Conestoga River: A History”. Don has done extensive research on Lancaster County grist mills and has recently published a book entitled “Mills of Lancaster County”. Don lives near Lancaster with his wife and has three grown children and two grandsons. \nLocation: Millport Conservancy \n  \n \nThis is a Member event. SUMMARY:The Art Gallery–Duel Exhibits Opening
DESCRIPTION:Above: Dganit Zauberman\, Yellow Light\, 12 x 12″\, Oil on Board \n“Further and Again: Sustainability in Visual Culture” and “The Millport Artists Project”\nMillport Conservancy and North Museum ask\, how do sustainability practices shape visual communications?\nPRE-REGISTER HERE\nThe Art Gallery Opening: March 13 at 6:30pm. Works of art from 11 Lancaster county and regional artists will be on display and available for purchase through the end of May. \nArt and science come together in simultaneous exhibits “Further and Again: Sustainability in Visual Culture” and “The Millport Artists Project\,” both on display in The Art Gallery at North Museum from March 13—May\, 2025. All members of the public are invited to the exhibit opening March 13 at 6:30pm\, followed by a conversation with the artists at 7pm. Enjoy fellowship and light fare as we discuss how sustainability practices shape visual communications. \n“Further and Again” asks artists\, when we create with repurposed materials or ideas\, how do those materials or ideas carry forward their prior purpose into these new works? Does literal and figurative reuse have the potential to reveal a rich depth of meaning and connection that would otherwise remain undiscovered? Seven artists explore their relationship to the lifecycle of materials\, process\, and meaning in their works. Participating artists include: Bonnie Mae Carrow\, Paula Cahill\, Kirstin Fisher\, Sheri Hansen\, Katherine Hess\, Mimi Shapiro\, and Dganit Zauberman. \n“The Millport Artists Project” began with a visit by participating artists to the Millport Conservancy in Lititz\, PA\, in Autumn\, 2024. They were asked to make artwork about what they discovered there. This experience produced a combination of works made in response to their time spent at Millport working indirectly through sketches\, or en plein air. Shown alongside each artist’s existing studio works to provide context\, some pieces are still in production. Come back often to uncover what the Conservancy has unleashed in these artists’ everyday practice—from the studio to the open air! Participating artists include: Doug Anderson\, Stacy Caldwell\, Sheri Hansen\, Marisa Smith Alberts\, and Jason Ward. \nPRE-REGISTER HERE\n  \nArtwork shown is from previous exhibit.\nThe Art Gallery is always open to the public when the museum is operating\, Wednesday-Sunday at 400 College Ave. Part of North Museum’s A.L.E. (Adult Learning and Engagement) program\, works of art from 11 Lancaster county and regional artists will be on display and available for purchase through the end of May. \nInterested in participating in our gallery events\, or purchasing art? SUMMARY:Supervolcanoes–Planetarium Show
DESCRIPTION:The scene was 74\,000 years ago\, on the island of Sumatra. A volcanic eruption triggered the sudden and violent collapse of a vast regional plateau. Toba\, as the volcano is known today\, was the largest volcanic eruption in the last 25 million years. But Earth has seen far larger. 250 million years ago\, an eruption in what’s now Siberia lasted a million years and was probably responsible for the greatest episode of mass extinction in Earth’s history. \nSupervolcanoes is an immersive planetarium show that looks back at rare classes of eruptions that have marshaled the energy that lurks\, like a sleeping dragon\, beneath the surface of planet Earth. The program moves beyond Earth to explore the impact of giant volcanic eruptions around our solar system. Audiences will fly down to Neptune’s frigid moon Triton\, and onto the ultimate volcanic world: Jupiter’s moon Io. On a visit to a legendary North American hot spot\, Yellowstone National Park\, the film asks: can a supervolcano erupt in our time? \nBUY TICKETS \nWatch planetarium show trailer below.
