“Betelgeuse and Stellar Evolution”

Sean P. Hendrick’s presentation will cover the recent observations of Betelgeuse’s dimming, its history as a variable star, the possibility of Supernova. Learn what a Supernova would look like in our night sky and if the dimming of a star actually means a supernova is imminent.

Dr. Sean P. Hendrick is the Chairperson and Associate Professor of Physics at Millersville University. Born in Philadelphia on June 14, 1973, Dr. Hendrick was inspired to become an astronomer at a young age when his parents bought a telescope to observe a planetary conjunction in 1981. He graduated from LaSalle College High School in 1991 and then attended University of Virginia, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics and Astronomy in 1994. Dr. Hendrick received his Ph.D in Astrophysics from North Carolina State University in 2003 studying supernova remnants with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. He joined Millersville’s faculty in 2005, and has enjoyed teaching Introductory Astronomy to students every semester since.
