Mark your calendars🦋‼️ Monday, May 6, The Lancaster Butterfly and Entomological Club will meet at 7:00 PM at the North Museum of Nature and Science. Please come out and bring a friend to support the club!
Our club member Gayle Steffy will speak, her topic “Radio Tags: The Future of Monarch Butterfly Tracking.”
In an effort to better understand and save our beloved monarch, scientists are now using very high frequency radio transmitters. Gayle will discuss the types of transmitters being developed, the challenges involved, and what we can learn about monarchs using them. This is cutting-edge technology. What a chance to learn about it! Gayle’s research was recently featured in Wendy Williams’ nationally-published book The Language of Butterflies.
In her own words, Gayle states: “When I was a kid I would watch scientists track animals with radio collars on TV and wish I could do that with monarchs. Over the years, I watched electronics get smaller and smaller, and thought maybe someday …, and then, it’s happening, and I know the people developing one of the transmitters! And now I’m applying for a grant to do my dream job this summer!”
